Useful Species

Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior)

We need to be aware of what trees and plants which will benefit us in a bushcraft and survival situation but in terms of getting a working knowledge of them we need to consider if they are going to be useful to us but also if they are widespread and common in the areas that they occur.

There are many species and sub-species of trees and even more so when we start to look at plants, and to learn them all is a mammoth task but also unnecessary for our purposes.

If we consider the well known 80/20 principle, if we apply this to bushcraft we need to examine what proportion of the trees and plants around us do we need to know, in order to achieve the ends we want to?

These needs will be basically fire, shelter, water, food and medicinal, in order for us to survive.
