When you are involved in any outdoor activity, whether it be bushcraft or mountain walking, it is important to understand why the natural things around us are there and what makes them function.
When I first started looking at trees and flowers as part of my learning to identify what may or may not be useful for survival, I quickly became aware that this subject was massive and that I needed to understand what I was looking at.
That initial interest in survival has now broadened to being so much more. It is now more about my appreciation of nature in all its magnificent forms and how we depend on it and it depends on us as human beings.

The nutrients that make up our bodies come from nature, our cells are powered by energy gained from nature, the ecosystems that clean the air that we breath and the water we need to survive are provided by nature. This is the nature that we have all evolved from and of which we are a part. The first step is to understand it and how we mutually benefit each other. The bottom line is that we need to nurture and protect it.
The One Spark Outdoor Adventure Ethos is not about killing and burning everything in sight or damaging fragile landscapes. It is about appreciating our surroundings, whether they be woodland, moors, lakes or hills and mountains. It is about gaining that knowledge about how we can benefit from our surroundings and how our surroundings can benefit from us whether that be in the form of responsible woodland management or by doing our bit to prevent environmental damage in our fragile mountains.

We need to preserve all these as special places for generations to come.
Finally, ‘One Spark’ means the one we can provide to you, in the form of inspiration, that will light your inner fire. That fire is knowledge and a passion which will enable you to become wiser and more enlightened, strengthened and supported from that place deep inside yourself.

It is only when we begin to uncover the potential of our inner strength and awaken that inner fire that we can take massive steps into realising our power for change, transformation, success and happiness, not only in ourselves but in our fragile surroundings.
