The North Yorkshire Moors National Park, located in the northeast corner of North Yorkshire, is England’s largest expanse of heather moorland.

The challenge begins just north of Osmotherley and traverses the full width of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors, essentially following the line of the watershed at its widest and highest points, ending on the North Sea coast at Ravenscar.

This classic route is steeped in folklore which remembers the many corpses carried over the moors on old coffin routes and the ancient burial mounds encountered. The name derives from a ‘lyke’ (a corpse) and the ‘wake’ (watching over the corpse).

Groups are kept relatively small – the maximum group size is 25 – to limit erosion of the hill and moorland environment. For this reason, we only run two standard crossings each year, although if you have a date in mind, please get in touch and if we can accommodate we will.

We traverse the moors, stopping at 5 checkpoints en-route for refreshments and at one point even cross an old Roman road.

By the end of the walk your feet will be aching and your body more than just tired, but the prize of the small coffin badge and certificate will be yours as we celebrate a successful crossing!

How can you prepare?
- We will send you a kit list before the event. We can provide advice regarding the type of kit if required. Bear in mind that new boots will need to be ‘walked in’. 40 miles is a long way!
- Be organised and if you need to improve your fitness undertake a training or fitness programme. Have a positive mindset – you CAN do this! People who enter with a positive attitude and who have done some training usually succeed.
- As the date approaches, ease off training the week before and ensure you have the recommended items on the kit list.
- Consider raising sponsorship for a group or individual charity. During the walk give it your best. If you are struggling just spare a thought for those worse off than you, perhaps those you are raising money for, and that should give you the motivation to complete the challenge successfully.
