Navigation Courses

Why not work towards gaining yourself an award in navigation?

As well as providing our own bespoke navigation courses we are also a registered course provider for the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS). This is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside.

Many people these days rely on electronic means with which to navigate. While some of these are fine, they are prone to failure – battery expiring, loss of signal, loss of device, insufficient detail – the list goes on. What would you do if you were to experience a sudden change of weather where your visibility was suddenly and substantially reduced?

In these cases, the knowledge of how to properly use a map and compass can be essential in order that you are able to safely navigate your way to your intended destination. While you may always carry these, can you honestly say that in the most severe conditions you would be able to use them effectively?

Our navigation courses will help you to enjoy the countryside more, gain confidence in map reading in all weather conditions, develop your ability to plan your own routes and develop sound navigation skills.

We run courses to suit all levels, whether you’re just starting out, or whether you’re seeking to up your navigation skills with more advanced methods. If you’re new to navigation there’s no point bombarding you with too much information at an early stage so we lead you in gradually and at a pace best suited to you remembering what you’re taught.

Navigation is the fundamental skill required by anyone who wishes to travel through the hills and mountains safely, and in all weather conditions. Various skills are required, especially when conditions are testing, but the one vital ingredient is confidence. You need to be confident in your ability to put the skills you have into practice. Our courses aim to provide you with the skills and confidence to be safe in all conditions.

You may be already familiar with methods of navigation but need to develop them or and perhaps you’re preparing for a Mountain Leader assessment or have been deferred on the navigation part of it, as many are. We have been through that assessment process and know what is required and how to best achieve it. Whatever your requirement, we can arrange a day to suit your needs.
