Come with us into the mountains where will take you to some of the best locations from which to observe low flying military aircraft. There are various places, some of which require a fairly strenuous ascent and others which do not. One this is guaranteed with them all – should there be any aerial activity you will be in the best place from which to view it.

Typhoon, Lake District, 2012

By the very nature of military low flying, several factors might mean that on any given day there is no guarantee of seeing anything at all. After all, there is no set timetable for such flights as they can very quickly become outdated due to weather conditions or training requirements and aircrew plan each sortie individually.

Hercules, Lake District, 2014

Military low flying in the UK is an essential skill for military aircrew. It allows them to undertake various roles like reconnaissance, search and rescue and transporting troops or humanitarian aid. It also provides military aircrews with one of the best chances of survival. Whatever missions our armed forces are asked to undertake, the aircrew must be able to fulfil the task as effectively as possible and they are only able to do this through specialist training gained through the use of the UK low flying system.

Hawk, Wales, 2012

The UK is divided into 20 separate low flying areas. These include areas in Wales and the Lake District, respectively known as Low Flying Area’s 7 and 17.
