Navigation is the ability to get consistently and effectively from one place to another. On a clear day, with defined paths, this can be deceptively simple, especially when relying on your mobile phone, or other people, to navigate for you.
But if you are in complex terrain and conditions become difficult, your mobile phone dies on you and you lose sight of others, how confident are you that you can competently use a map and compass? Sound familiar?
Some people already have some experience of the mountains but may be unsure of exactly how they would navigate if they were away from clear paths or tracks or if the weather came down.
Others may be familiar with map and compass but want to tighten up their skills. Examples have been parents who want to take their children into the mountains but just need a bit more confidence through to candidates working up to as assessment for a leader qualification or a military attachment.
If you don’t want the structure and staged learning that the NNAS courses provide and require a couse tailored to what you want to learn, this may be the course for you. The course is run over two days, usually in a mountanous area of the UK, and you will learn everything from the fundamentals of the Ordnance Survey system of mapping, through the grid system, contours, compasses, pacing and so many more key skills required for successful navigation. That’s just the start.
Most, if not all of the time, will be spent outdoors and you will have plenty of time to practice the skills you will learn, along with others on the course. There is no certificate at the end of this one, just the knowlege and confidence that will come from learning something new and that feeling of “I’m pretty sure I know what I’m doing now!”.
We don’t set specific dates in advance for these courses. When somebody makes an enquiry via the form at the end of this page, maybe you, and a particular period is identified, the dates will appear in the grid below and will be open to other bookings. Of course if you would prefer, you can have the day all to yourself and benefit from 1 to 1 instruction. Ask about this if it’s what you would prefer.
